Cornered in Chess

If we have a standard chessboard and 32 dominoes that can cover 2 squares each, it is easy to see we can cover the whole board. If we cut out two opposite corners, then we must take away one of the dominoes. Can we still cover the board with no overlap or dominoes hanging off the board? If so, how? If not, why?
